New work in Latino Book Review's 2022 print issue

I want to take a moment to thank the editors at Latino Book Review for selecting my poem, Areíto, for their 2022 print issue! LBR was kind enough to publish two of my works in 2020, and it’s an honour to be chosen yet again.

Aréito came to me while reflecting on lyrical and choreographic storytelling, and its place in my ancestral Taíno culture. While there are many indigenous traditions whose storytelling traditions are grounded in lyrical poetry and song coupled with formalised dance (especially our Polynesian kin), in some ways the Taíno tradition has persisted in its ability to adapt and morph, and in other ways has been lost to colonialism and time.

So I thought about the Puerto Rico of today—the contemporary Borikén. What are our immediate experience, cultural threats, and our socioeconomic pressures? What are our artefacts and leitmotifs?

You can purchase both the high-quality print and digital editions of the 2022 issue at the LBR website, with proceeds going to support this non-profit, Latinx-run publication.
